VA BENEFITS REFERENCE
How To Request Your C-File
Your C-file is the claims record VA maintains for benefits matters. It is broader than a single decision letter and different from a My HealtheVet medical-record download. Requesting it can help you understand the evidence and decisions, but the request itself does not challenge a benefits determination.
Decide Which Records You Need
VA Form 20-10206 includes a Claims File selection and separate choices for records such as disability examinations. If you need a particular rating decision, associated codesheet, or examination report, identify that document and its date when known. You can describe the scope without guessing what documents VA holds.
First check whether the official claim-status tool already offers the decision letter you need. That can answer a narrower request, but downloading a letter should not be confused with receiving the complete claims file. Likewise, health-care records available through My HealtheVet do not replace a benefits-record request.
Start From VA's Current Form Page
Use VA's personal-records request page for Form 20-10206. It links the online request and the downloadable paper form. Starting there helps avoid using an old saved form or a third-party page that asks for sensitive information.
For a request about yourself, follow the current identity, contact, and signature instructions. The paper form includes specific signing requirements; the online process has its own steps. This guide does not submit a request, verify identity, or receive your records. Provide personal details only through the official process or another authorized secure channel.
Submit Through The Correct Official Channel
VA's Privacy Act guidance directs VBA records requests to the Centralized Support Division and offers an online form route. If using paper, follow the current form's mailing or fax instructions. Keep a copy of the completed request and any confirmation or delivery record.
A request for another person's records requires the appropriate authorization; access to someone's information should not be assumed merely because you know their claim details. Avoid posting requests or received documents publicly. A claims file can contain identifying information, medical evidence, and other sensitive material.
Keep Review Deadlines On A Separate Calendar
A records request is not a Supplemental Claim, Higher-Level Review request, or Board Appeal. It does not automatically extend the deadline for any of those actions. Read your decision notice and seek accredited help promptly if records are still outstanding as a review deadline approaches.
Do not plan around an invented guaranteed turnaround time. Follow up through the official contact information on VA's records guidance, and identify the request already made. When records arrive, compare the contents with the scope requested, keep the original response, and note any specific missing document before asking VA for clarification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Request Only My Examination Report?
The official form includes a disability-examinations option. Identify the examination date if known and follow the form's instructions for specifying the records.
Does Requesting A C-File Preserve My Appeal Deadline?
Not automatically. Records access and decision review are separate processes. Use the required review procedure and applicable deadline for your actual decision.
