VA BENEFITS REFERENCE
How A 0% Rating Works
A 0% service-connected rating recognizes service connection but provides no ordinary monthly compensation for that condition. It can still matter for other benefits and later evaluation. It is different from a denial of service connection.
Read Both Parts Of The Decision
Separate the service-connection finding from the percentage evaluation. A decision granting service connection at 0% has resolved the connection favorably while assigning a non-compensable level. A denial has not made that same favorable service-connection finding.
Check the condition name, effective date, and reasons for the percentage. Those details help distinguish a disagreement with the original evaluation from evidence that the condition later worsened. A zero on the rating line does not explain why VA selected it; the decision's reasoning is the useful place to start.

Keep Ordinary Pay And Other Benefits Separate
In ordinary combined-rating arithmetic, adding a 0% evaluation does not increase the combined value. A person with only a non-compensable evaluation does not receive a standard monthly compensation amount merely because service connection was granted.
VA identifies other benefits that may be available with a 0% rating, including health care and certain insurance or travel benefits. Each program has its own requirements. Do not assume that 0% automatically provides every health, dental, or travel benefit listed on a general benefits page. Check the particular program rather than converting its availability into a guaranteed entitlement.
Know The Separate Multiple-Zero Rule
Section 3.324 permits a 10% evaluation for two or more separate permanent service-connected disabilities that are non-compensable and clearly interfere with normal employability. That evaluation cannot be combined with another rating. It is a specific rule, not the result of adding zeros in the combined table.
Two 0% evaluations therefore do not automatically become 10% simply because there are two of them. The permanence and employability requirements also matter. Our ordinary payment lookup does not determine this exception, special monthly compensation, or eligibility for a benefit outside the standard rate table.

Choose The Next Question Carefully
If you disagree with the evaluation when it was assigned, review the decision-review options and the notice deadlines. If the condition worsened after the decision, VA also provides a process for requesting an increased evaluation. These situations can involve different evidence and effective-date questions.
Keep a copy of the decision and identify what is disputed before selecting a path. A rating-increase guide can help explain the process, but a calculator cannot determine the appropriate percentage from symptoms. Ask VA or an accredited representative about the applicable route; do not assume that receiving 0% prevents you from requesting further review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does 0% mean VA denied service connection?
No. A service-connected 0% evaluation grants the connection but assigns a non-compensable level.
Do two 0% ratings automatically produce 10%?
No. Section 3.324 has additional requirements, including permanent disabilities that clearly interfere with normal employability, and its award cannot be combined with another rating.
