PRACTICAL TOOLS

VA Deadline Calculator

Use the date and notice type printed by VA to calculate ordinary review checkpoints. The calendar shows the applicable routes and downloadable dates. Special deadlines and procedural exceptions must be checked against the notice and official rules.

Dates From Your Notice

Ordinary modernized compensation notices only. Contested claims, legacy appeals, proposals, extensions and tolling need their own rules.

Worked Example: January 15, 2026

A standard rating decision dated January 15, 2026 has a one-year calendar checkpoint of January 15, 2027 for ordinary Higher-Level Review and Board review, and for Supplemental Claim continuous pursuit. A final Board notice on January 15, 2026 has a 120-day Court checkpoint of May 15, 2026. These examples have no weekend adjustment.

How This Is Calculated

The tool distinguishes a one-calendar-year anniversary from a 120-calendar-day interval. The starting event day is excluded from day counts. It displays the base date and a roll-forward for standard weekends and federal holiday observances under the applicable time-computation rules.

The one-year Supplemental Claim entry is about continuous pursuit and possible effective-date preservation; a later Supplemental Claim can still be allowed. An HLR decision cannot be sent through HLR again. A Board decision has a separate Court route. An intent to file does not extend Higher-Level Review, Board, or Court deadlines. Under VA’s manual, a qualifying intent to file within one year of the decision, followed by a qualifying completed Supplemental Claim within one year of that intent, may preserve continuous pursuit. This calculator does not evaluate that filing history.

Exceptional closures, presidential holidays, reconsideration, equitable tolling, contested claims and legacy proceedings are outside the automatic calendar. February 29 notices use an explicitly labeled conservative February 28 anniversary checkpoint. The printed notice and competent review of the governing rules matter more than this calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does A Supplemental Claim Have An Absolute One-Year Filing Limit?

No. The one-year window shown here concerns continuous pursuit and the potential effective date. A Supplemental Claim may generally be filed later, but an earlier effective date may be lost.

Can I Use An Intent To File To Extend A Board Or Court Deadline?

No. An intent to file and a review deadline are different rules. Do not treat an intent-to-file confirmation as an extension of a Higher-Level Review, Board, or Court deadline.

Will This Tool Send Reminders?

No. A calendar file downloads to the device only. Import it into a calendar if desired, then confirm the actual filing deadline and set any reminder there.
