VA BENEFITS REFERENCE
Moving States With A VA Rating
Moving involves several separate records and programs. Plan your VA contact update, health-care handoff, and state-benefit checks before relying on the benefits available at the new address.
Separate Federal Compensation From State Programs
VA publishes national basic compensation tables based on disability rating and dependent status. They do not use a state-of-residence multiplier. Moving between states is therefore not a reason to substitute a different state payment table for the same federal award.
State and local benefits are different. A property exemption or resident recreation benefit may depend on where you live or the property you occupy. Make two lists: the VA benefits and records you need to update, and the separate state programs that need a new eligibility check.
Update The Right VA Records
VA says changing your address in your VA.gov profile updates disability compensation, claims and appeals, health care, pension, education, and Veteran Readiness and Employment records. Check the saved information after making the change, including the address used for correspondence.
Some programs maintain separate records. VA specifically directs people using benefits such as home loans, CHAMPVA, or certain insurance programs to contact the responsible program directly. Follow the current address-change page for each benefit you use rather than assuming one profile edit reaches every office.

Arrange A Health-Care Handoff
Contact your current VA care team about the move and ask about a Traveling/Relocating Veteran consult. VA describes this process as a way to coordinate with the receiving facility and arrange a handoff. Provide the destination, timing, contact information, and ongoing care needs.
Discuss prescriptions, refills, planned appointments, and follow-up testing before leaving. An address update is not the same as confirming a new appointment or medication plan. Ask which facility will handle each immediate need and whom to contact if the planned transition changes.

Recheck Benefits At Both Ends
Review what ends when you leave, as well as what may start after arrival. Alaska's disabled-veteran recreation card becomes void when residency ends. A benefit described as permanent can still contain that condition.
For a new home, ask the destination assessor about the property exemption before assuming it transfers from the old state. California's exemption, for example, depends on qualifying disability and principal-residence requirements, among other conditions. A prior approval elsewhere does not replace the destination program's own eligibility determination and application.
Keep A Move Checklist With Confirmations
Download the VA benefit letters the destination agencies request. Keep copies of your applications, submitted documents, and confirmation messages. Record the office responsible for each application and any filing or renewal date it gives you.
After the move, confirm that VA notices reach you and that separate benefit offices have the correct address. Ask each state or local agency when an approved benefit begins and what changes must be reported. Budget from confirmed eligibility and effective dates, not an assumed transfer of every prior benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a VA.gov address update change every benefit record?
No. VA identifies programs that update through your profile and others that need direct contact. Check the current address-change instructions for all benefits you use.
Will my old state benefit card remain valid?
It depends on that program. Alaska's reviewed disabled-veteran recreation card becomes void when residency ends. Check your own issuing agency before continuing to use a card after moving.
